Perhaps
you're already an expert in body energies such as chakras or maybe you've
always wondered what chakra meant? Chakras were discovered
independently from Chinese meridians
and
Mayan winds.
Or were they? Each culture has different systems of beliefs, yet when
body energy lines
are considered, they are strikingly similar. Now, even skeptics rooted
in Western science are catching up to these ideas,
albeit slowly, though the philosophy and methods of proof, as they always
have, differ.
The concept of an energy exchange between individuals has to a certain
extent, become a global belief. This idea in many of the healing arts
of both Eastern and Western medicine, is referred to as 'Energy
Medicine' which utilizes the human energy field (HEF). There are many
research papers discussing the subject of Energy Medicine and fields
in
depth:
a list of 46 papers is listed in the
reference section below.
Even though scientific
tools used to study these subtle energy fields are still in their
formative stages, Buddhists, Hindus, healers, and others over the
centuries have developed the ability to see these energies. Although
difficult to describe in words the energy fields are variously described
as crystal light color arrays, blooming lotus flowers, auras, and combinatons
thereof.
Eastern
medicine
and philosophy have demonstrated
for
thousands of years that when the body's vortices of energy are in perfect
balance,
our vital force is stronger resulting in superior
emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual health.
Color, scent,
and sound play
a
critical
role in these healing arts. Fragrances
such as those used in aroma therapy, as well as light and sound frequencies
have the amazing power to repair and
balance our energy
system.
Perhaps you've read our page about color and perhaps not.
This page is best read after the color
page which is here.
This page is a topical discussion of some of the basic and simplified principals
behind the term chakra, energy lines, as well as a few related subjects.
We are hoping that this tidbit of information
stimulates
your interest towards a deeper view offered through the many great books on these
subjects.
Unfortunately, as it is with other new perspectives, sometimes it takes
a serious event or illness to provide the impetuous and willingness to learn
others ways to improve our lives. These teachings can also be
utilized to enhance spiritual understanding or simply mental abilities. That
said,
even
if
wellness
is
not
your primary interest perhaps the
spiritual or cerebral aspects are.
Researchers are busy working to provide evidence and a scientific
basis for energy techniques. James
Oschman wrote that sensitive instruments can detect the body’s
minute energy field. He said that "Concepts
of ‘healing
energy’ have gradually swung from suspicion and ridicule
to respectability."; (August 1998 Healing Touch Newsletter).
Dr. Oschman has written an excellent book on the subject which
is listed
in the reference section
at the bottom of this page.
Most people have had a cardiogram, an ECG, which measures the heart's electromagnetic
field. The heart generates the strongest electromagnetic field produced by the
body. Did you know that this field is actually measurable a number of feet away
from the body with SQUID-based magnetometers and sensitive electrostatic detectors?
What is a SQUID? A SQUID (super conducting quantum interference device)
is a sensitive magnetometer which is an instrument for measuring the direction
and/or intensity of magnetic fields.
Did you also know that every cell has an electromagnetic field that can alter
its behavior when manipulated? Recall in the page about color, how colored light
is being used to treat behavior, cancer and more. Sound is also used in the same
way.
Chakras: To begin to understand the map of consciousness
that the human
body represents, one place to start is ancient
Hindus in India. Hindu philosophers
have
been
studying consciousness for thousands of years. 'Hin'
means to remove and 'du' means darkness, therefore one who makes the effort
to remove the darkness of spiritual ignorance, is a seeker or a 'Hindu'. Sanskrit
is an official language in India, but it is currently used only for religious
purposes.
This is the ancient
language of Indian Vedas, sacred
Hindu texts,
as well as some of the early Buddhist texts.
Chakra
is a Sanskrit word meaning vortex, or wheel.
What are chakras? Our consciousness,
our energy system, is composed of seven energy centers. Chakras
are these seven primary points that channel energy up a central
channel located
at
the spine. This life force, like Qi (Che), is channeled
through
three main central meridian lines of the body as subtle
energies which are called prana. Qi and prana are one in
the
same. Each of the primary seven
chakras is associated with one of the seven endocrine glands,
and also with a group of nerves called a plexus.
Chakra colors denote the seven
chakra
points. For example, violet, silver
and
white
are life
force
or
energy
colors
that traditionally
relate
to the 7th or crown chakra. As you enhance your understanding
of energy points, lines and more you will discover how color, music
and love are intrinsically interwoven into
our very beings.
The mind-body connection: Physical associations with each chakra
are linked to emotional
associations. The chakras
provide a map of consciousness which can be used
to understand symptoms that are associated
with each chakra. You will see in this brief discussion that the physical cannot
be separated from the emotional aspects of the self and that all diseases and
imbalanced mental states are a result of a deficiency in this relationship.
The body is a map of the consciousness
within. Tensions in the body represent tensions in a person's consciousness
concerning what is
happening in the person's
life at the time that the symptom developed. Therefore tension
in a particular part of the consciousness and the chakra
associated with that part of the consciousness, is detected
by the nerves of the plexus associated with that chakra, and is
communicated to the parts of the body controlled by that plexus. If this
tension
occurs continuously eventually symptoms develop on a physical
level.
The chakra emotional connections
bring to mind reports from people who have had transplant surgeries and
unexplained memories as well as uncharacteristic desires. The more
you understand about
these ancient beliefs the more interesting they become as they connect
dots of our current knowledge together.
The seven primary chakras: The system begins at the
root chakra or Muladhara which is located
at
the
base
of
the
spine in the abdominal region and is followed by the sacral chakra or Svashisthana.
The solar plexus chakra or Manipura, is third. The heart chakra or Anahata
is the next which is followed by the throat chakra or Vishuddha.
The brow center
or
third
eye is known as Ajna. Finally, the crown chakra or Sahasrara,
which means thousand fold or infinite, is located at the top of the head.
Each chakra or spinning wheel produces astral colors that can only
be perceived
by
an advanced yogic and the healer.
Each
chakra is like a solid ball of energy interpenetrating the physical
body. Each of these points of energy corresponds with the location of
the endocrine glands from which hormones and neurotransmitters like
endorphins are released into
the body. There are at least twenty types of endorphins that have been
found in humans. They are located in the pituitary gland, in other
parts of the brain, and are also distributed throughout the
nervous system. There are three major types of endorphins: beta endorphins,
found primarily in the pituitary gland; and enkephalins and dynorphin
which are distributed throughout the nervous system. The pituitary
gland is directed by the hypothalamus which is the body's biological
clock. The hypothalamus controls most of the functions of the pituitary
gland, and controls the autonomic nervous system.
Endorphins are extremely important since they decrease feelings of pain, modulate
appetite, release sex hormones, and enhance the immune response. With high
endorphin levels, we feel fewer negative effects of stress. Acupuncture and
massage therapy
stimulate endorphin secretion. Sexual activity also triggers endorphin release.
Meditation and also our favorite chocolate can also increase the amount of
endorphins released in your body.
Most
chakra diagrams depict only the predominant color for a chakra. Each chakra
is described as a many petalled lotus, with some having more petals than
others.
The crown chakra, for example, may have a thousand petals, while the root
chakra only
has six petals.
Each of the chakras is energy vibrating at a certain frequency,
in a logical and orderly sequence of seven vibrations. The colors of the
spectrum also represent a series of seven vibrations in a logical and orderly
sequence,
as do the notes of the musical scale.
Music played in a certain
key vibrates
a particular chakra. We feel a particular way when we hear that note.
Up the scale for C (do) to B (ti), (remember solfege?; the method of
assigning
syllables
to names of the musical scale: Do, Re, Mé, Fa, Sol, La, Ti).
From the 1st to 7th chakra, the elements become more and more subtle,
moving through
the
five
physical
elements
of earth,
water,
fire, air, and ether, to the spiritual elements of inner sound and
inner light. The heaviest vibrations or the longest wavelength are
on the bottom
and the
lightest on the top.
A particular
color can be used to represent a chakra in its ideal state. Our relationship
with a certain color reveals our relationship with the part of our
consciousness
that the color represents.
Defining
the
colors
of
chakras is confused by various belief systems. However, a simplified version
of one system
is illustrated here.
Root chakra: The
root
(1st
chakra)
produces
a
lotus
of
four petals, red and orange in color. The spleen or sacral plexus (2nd
chakra) produces
a
six
petal
lotus,
orange, blue, green, yellow, violet, and crimson, but principally crimson.
This chakra
is associated with the color red. Its musical note is C (Do) and it is
associated with earth. Parts
of
the
body
controlled
by the naval
chakra
and this chakra include the skeleton and lymph systems, the legs, and the
elimination system.
The adrenal glands are also associated with this chakra.
The physical sense of smell, and therefore the organ of the sense of
smell, the nose, is associated with this chakra. Problems
with the nose or affecting the sense of smell reflect tensions
at
the
level of the root chakra. Symptoms in
the parts of the body controlled by this chakra reflect tensions
here; therefore the person views the world through
a perceptual
filter of insecurity or fear. This
chakra is also associated with our relationship with our mother. This
chakra is
associated with the element of earth.
The
root chakra is emotionally connected to our area of consciousness, smell:
and include the emotions surrounding our feelings of safety, security,
survival and trust. These emotional areas in our lives concern employment,
our home and finances.
Abdominal or navel or sexual or lumbar plexus or spleen or sacral
chakra: The
lumbar plexus (2nd
chakra) corresponds to the nerve ganglion that is connected to the sciatic
nerve. It
is positioned in the area between the navel and the pubic bone. This chakra
is associated
with
the color orange and the element water. Its musical note is D (Re). It
is frequently
referred
to
as the seat of
life.
Parts of the body controlled by this chakra include the abdomen, reproductive
system
and the
lumbar region of the back. The sense of taste and appetite are associated
with this
chakra,
as well as the element of water. This chakra is associated with
the
parts of our consciousness concerned with food and sex. It is involved with
the person's willingness to feel their emotions. When this chakra is in its
ideal state, the person is in touch with the communication from the
body
to the person within it, and is listening to and responding appropriately
to what the body wants and needs.
The sacral
chakra is emotionally connected to taste: appetite, feelings, sensations,
sex.
Solar
plexus chakra: The solar
plexus (3rd chakra) produces a ten petal lotus,
pink,
orange,
and
green in color, but primarily green. The color of this chakra is
yellow and it is associated with the element fire.
Its musical note is E (Mé). The endocrine gland associated with
this chakra is the pancreas. Other parts
of
the body associated with this chakra include the organs closest to the
solar plexus
such as the digestive system which included stomach, gall bladder, liver,
pancreas, and so on, spleen,
as well
as
the
skin
organ,
the muscular system and the face. The physical sense associated
with this chakra
is the sense of sight.
This chakra
is
associated with the parts of our consciousness dealing with perceptions
of control, power
or freedom. In its ideal state, the solar plexus chakra represents ease
of being with
comfort in what is real for one's self as well as being comfortable with
who you
are.
The solar plexus
chakra is emotionally connected to vision: control, freedom, intellect,
power, self-definition.
Heart chakra: The heart or cardiac plexus (4th chakra) produces
a twelve petal
lotus, bright golden yellow in color. The color associated
with this chakra
is emerald green. Its musical note is F (Fa). Parts of the body associated
with the heart chakra are the thymus, circulatory and immune systems as
well as respiration. The
physical
sense
associated
with
this
chakra is the sense of touch, as it relates to the person inside
the body. For example, when a person experiences extreme sensitivity about
being touched,
we
would ask what was happening at the level of the heart chakra. This chakra
is associated with the element of air therefore when a person has difficulty
with
breathing such as asthma, their relationship
with air reflects their relationship with love which has resulted in difficulty
letting
it
in,
or
letting it out.
The heart
chakra is emotionally connected to touch: acceptance, giving, perceptions
of love, and relating with others.
Throat chakra: The throat or cervical plexus (5th chakra) produces
a sixteen petal lotus, in both cobalt blue and green. The color associated
with
this chakra
is
sky blue.
Its musical note is G (Sol). Parts of the body associated with the throat
chakra include
the arms
and hands,
shoulders,
throat, thyroid gland and metabolism which is called ether. This chakra
is associated with
the
parts
of
the
consciousness
concerned with expressing and receiving. Expressing includes communication
and also
artistic
expression. This chakra is also associated with listening to one's intuition.
The throat
chakra is emotionally connected to hearing: abundance, expressing,
intuition, and receiving.
Third eye chakra: The brow or third eye or cartoid plexus (6th
chakra) is
located
between the eyebrows. Its lotus produces two petals, containing forty-eight
rose-colored
petals. The color associated with this chakra is indigo blue.
Its musical note is A (La). This chakra is associated with the carotid
plexus,
and
the nerves on each side of the face, plus the pituitary gland.
The pituitary
gland is a gland located at the base of the brain, and is connected to
the hypothalamus of the brain. The
pituitary gland secretes a number of hormones which control hormone
secretion
by other glands in the body. These include the adrenal
glands, the thyroid, and ovaries. It also secretes the
growth hormone and prolactin. It also stores
and releases the hormones oxytocin and vasopressin (ADH).
The
third eye or brow is the seat of the soul and is connected to inner sound.
It is believed to
vibrate
at
a
higher
frequency
than sound and in some, as pure light.
The brow
chakra is emotionally connected to extra sensory perceptions (ESP):
individualized consciousness, and spiritual awareness.
Headaches that
are located in
the
temples or center of the forehead are associated with tensions in the 6th
chakra. This chakra controls the entire endocrine system as a system,
and the process
of growth.
This chakra is associated with extra sensory perception as well as all
of the inner senses that correspond to the outer senses. The brow chakra
relates to the Taoist's primary chakra in the center of the brain
referred
to
as
the 'Square Inch'.
Crown chakra: The head or crown
(7th chakra) lotus produces one thousand petals in all colors, with the color
white
or violet
being most prominent. When developed, a healer can see a thousand petaled
lotus
of color blooming
at the top of the head. The color associated with the crown chakra is violet,
the color of amethyst. Its musical note is B (Ti). Parts of the body
controlled by
this
chakra
are the pineal gland system,
the brain, and the inner light of the entire nervous system.
The crown chakra is the
center
of
knowingness and wisdom. The total energy signature of the individual exists
within their crown chakra. It is also a replica of all of the other chakras.
This is where our unique pattern of consciousness is kept in constant touch
with information from the outer universe and also the subtle dimensions
of spiritual energy. The crown chakra is connected to the whole of creation.
This chakra
shows
our connection with God.
The element of
the crown
chakra is thought while its function is knowing. Knowing is discovered
through meditation. The crown chakra is associated with the aspects of
consciousness
concerned with unity or separation and with our sense of direction.
The crown chakra is emotionally connected to our sense of empathy:
source of direction and intuition and also universal consciousness.
The
crown chakra opens us to universal energy
while
the
root
chakra
connects us firmly to the earth.
Interesting Connections: Now that chakras have been
discussed, here are some other connections.
Yin and Yang: What also is intriguing is that the physical structures
in chakras are described as yin and yang. Yang or male components comprise
acting and will, while the experience and emotional components of spirit
and feeling are yin or female components. From this you can see how Chinese
medicine mirrors Hindu beliefs in critical ways.
The connection with Mayan medicine: Mayan medicine compares
in some ways to Chinese massage and acupuncture. Surprisingly there
are
striking
similarities
in the points
for punctures in Mayan traditional therapies when compared to
Chinese points and energy channels. The Mayans embrace the concept
of ‘wind’ which
plays a major role in the Maya tradition of massage and punctures.
These winds follow similar channels to Chinese meridians.
The
connection with Yoga: Hindu philosophy is
traditionally seen as six different systems which make up the main
belief systems of Hinduism. One of these schools of thought is yoga.
Yoga is not simply an exercise
program. The literal meaning of yoga is union or joining. The main
purpose for the practice of yoga is to reunite the individual
self with the absolute or pure consciousness.
Yoga
is a system which teaches the gradual process of gaining physical
and mental control as well
as
mastery
over the
body,
mind and self. This includes how to regulate this flow of
energy through the three meridians to
balance energy points and bring them into harmony. This harmonizing
of the body stimulates the release of hormones.
Yoga is an effective method
to convert mental and physical
energy into spiritual energy. Yoga enhances concentration, cures diseases,
releases tension,
rejuvenates the body and soul, and slows the aging process.
The connection with Reiki: You may have heard of Reiki, the
healing art sometimes called the 'healing touch'. Reiki is the Japanese
term for life
or universal energy.
It is a gentle method using certain touch points on or off the body
to balance the chakras or clear blockages. Reiki enhances the body's natural
ability to heal itself. Reiki is used to heal a person emotionally,
mentally, physically and spiritually.
What about my pets? In case you'd just love to know how to apply this
healing knowledge for your pet cat or dog and want to understand why specific
herbs, diets, or acupressure points are used to treat particular conditions

Sound: Sound
is the very basis of music. Sound has an unseen penetrating power that
compliments use of color and fragrance. Sound is measured in cycles
per second (Hertz or Hz). Each cycle of a wave is actually a single
pulse of sound.
It is well understood that sound can affect brain waves
and our bodies in profound
ways. The different rhythms of the body can be changed
with sound.
Sounds and musical notes invoke
emotion like nothing else can. Vibrations from rhythmic sounds
have a profound effect on brain activity. All religions
through time have used sound even if only that of the human voice.
Since ancient times the steady and rhythmic
beat of a drum struck
four and one half times per second has been used by tribes to transport
their shaman into the deepest part
of his shamanic
state
of consciousness.
Through sound, especially chanting or overtone singing, it is possible
to change the rhythmic pattern of our brain waves, as well as our
heart beat and respiration. Sound
is used as an aid to enter deep meditative states that are otherwise
difficult to achieve without years of experience.
It is no coincidence then that 4.5 beats, or cycles per second
corresponds to the trance like state of theta brain wave activity.
The constant, rhythmic chants of Tibetan Buddhist chant transport
the monks and other listeners into realms of blissful meditation.
Listen to the chanting of mantra OM MANI PADME HUM by Buddhists here.
Listen
to these bells, the
ocean, and
stream, for examples. Do these sounds stimulate your memories,
emotions, or other sensations?
Have
you ever heard of singing bowls, tingsha and bells? What are they? The
Chinese have used bells since ancient times. Great
and ancient temple bells, wind-bells or chimes are
found throughout China, Thailand and Japan. They believe that
sound is a manifestation of universal essence and helps to
sustain universal harmony.
Chinese Hand Bell sound
here Tingsha hand cymbals sound here
Singing bowls were brought from India to Tibet,
along with
the
teachings
of
the Buddha. Tibetan singing bowls
are used for deep relaxation, stress reduction, holistic healing,
Reiki,
and
chakra balancing.
Singing
bowls produce tones which invoke a deep state of relaxation
which aids
the listener into entering a meditative state. The harmonics
of singing bowls have been used to induce meditation and assist
spiritual seekers
to
the state of
enlightenment since ancient times. Most bowls vibrate within
the range of 8 to 12 Hertz which are the domain of alpha brain waves.
These frequencies invoke profound states
of contemplation or meditation. In addition to their traditional
usage for meditation, singing bowls are used for relaxation,
stress reduction, healing, and Reiki.
The tones are also used to shatter
accumulating negative energy within the chakras and the aura.
They resonate with
every cell
in
the body to release blockages and restore balance. As a result,
they have been used to treat many conditions. For examples: the tones
are used to stimulate the immune system or to relax hyperactive
children.
How do singing bowls sound? There are endless tones, including
those specific to chakras which are listed at the left under the
chakra diagram. Here are a few.
singing
bowl one singing
bowl two (keep speakers set on lower volume)
The throat chakra is associated with hearing and inner listening
playing. Therefore any bowl will help harmonize
this chakra to a certain extent. The throat chakra reflects
on such aspects of our being as creativity, humility, purification,
simplicity, and spiritual union.
Smaller diameter singing
bowls have higher tones. Larger bowls produce a wider dynamic
range of sound with rich and deeper Om tones. The shapes
of these bowls closely resemble traditional Chinese and Japanese
bells used in Buddhist temples. The
bowls are made from an alloy of metals and in some cases are
made
where one metal predominates for a particular effect. The
bowls are a fusion of seven metals.
According to tradition, the seven metals correspond with each of the
planets, gold for the Sun, silver for the Moon, mercury for well, Mercury,
copper for Venus, iron for Mars, tin for Jupiter, and lead for Saturn
or antimony. Some less expensive bowls are made only from bronze which
is a mixture of copper and tin. Bowls can be either Yang or Yin depending
on their
thickness. Some bowls are specially designed
to help balance a specific chakra. Contemporary singing
bowls are made from crystal or quartz and offer a softer tone.
What about sound frequencies in the body and
brain? Like
sound waves, the brain has its own set of vibrations it uses to communicate
with itself and the rest of the body. Read more about body
and brain frequencies here.
Colored
crystals and gems: In India, veda means knowledge.
Vedic culture means the spiritually aware society. According to
ancient Vedic philosophy, natural gemstones transmit powers. Fine
gems are
thought
to promote
good fortune, while poor quality gems have the opposite affect Chakra
healing with colored gems or crystals and stones is an ancient art
called ' laying on stones'.
Each chakra uses its own gems and stones. For example,
alexandrite, amethyst
and clear
quartz are used for the 7th chakra.
Colored gems are
used
because
it is
believed
that their different energies can be used
to balance
and
enhance
our
own body's
energies. Gems, colored stones and crystals are an interesting subject
if not just for their inherent beauty but also for their color and
affect on our state of mind. A gem hung around
your neck or for that matter anywhere with you, can be a source
of beautiful colored light no matter where you are. Just as acupuncture
is a very old system of medicine being rediscovered, so is color light
therapy, or photo therapy. You can read more about gems
and other stones here.
Chakra,
meridians and color: Chakras,
meridians and other energy points of the body is a fascinating subject.
Our
bodies are so
much more than a chemical
soup
contained by
flesh and bones. We are also electro-dynamic.
How these energies, our body, and brain relate to color, fragrance
and sound and the ease in which they can be used to enhance our
lives begs
a second look at our environments and what we wear.
Select colors, fragrances
and sounds for any area in your life that needs
renewal.
You will
be amazed at how much better you will feel.
